Magazine Construction

Here is my original magazine - I decided to make some changes as I didn't think that it fitted the genre well.  I have screen shot some inspiration text pieces and I am going to work on implementing them.

Here is the front of my magazine now.  I have made some changes to ensure that it meets the generic conventions of a Grime HipHop Magazine.

Article First Draft

WILLY (Milton James) is the next big thing in the Hip Hop world. This new young artist has recently made it on the scene but has already left his mark on the music world with not one, not two, but three top ten hits with in the last year. Milton is currently touring Britain on his first nation wide tour and will performing his latest song  ‘cat attack’ in which he collaborates Slickz, S Don and Marshy in Birmingham later this week.

WILLY started his career as young boy competing in local street rap battles with his friends in Bristol. By the age of 14 he was already a well-known young rapper among the amateur rap community in Bristol and at the age of 15 was asked to compete in an annual open mic competition held at Long Bar, Bristol. This was the first time the young rapper had ever felt out of his depth as he would not only be competing for the chance to win £5,000 but he would be battling against people several years older than him which he had never done before. Unfortunately he missed out of the final round being knocked out of the competition on the 5th round. However this underdog was undeterred and came back the year after with new bars and a newfound confidence that showed in his performance, and at the age of 16 he became the youngest person to win the competition and the £5,000!

After his victory at the annual Long Bar open mic he continued with his life as before, regularly competing in battles until he was approached by the YouTube channel SBTV and was asked if he wanted to feature in a video with Bovva and Eller two other up and coming stars in Bristol at the time. With in the first week of being uploaded on the web it has already racked up 40,00 hits and this more than double in the week that followed. Due to the videos success Milton was asked to produce another video on his own. The new video produce was even more successful that the previous reach 100,000 views with in a month, WILLY was now know all over the UK with he fans base increasing all the time.

Now at the age of 17 WILLY was about to sign his first ever record deal with a small record company in Bristol, Ivory Records. With their help Milton released his first mix tape with 6 tracks that was put on sale in the several music shops around Bristol and the music website iTunes. However his mix tape didn’t take off as well as hoped only selling a mire 700 copies in 8 months. Still undeterred this gritty young artist went away determined to make something of himself. After eight months of hard work he was back and signed with a bigger and better record label, Death Row Records.

After working closely with the owner of the label, Dr Dre. WILLY was now about to produce he first 12-track album Excess Vol 1. Unlike his first mix tape Excess Vol 1. was a huge success selling over 5,000 copies within the first week of release. A further 750,000 copies were sold with in the following month and since then the sales have just continued to increase sawing his album straight to the number one spot of the album charts.

Costume Planning

From looking at the types of clothing and fashion that hip hop artists wear I've been able to find out what sort of clothes I will need my models to wear, for example joggers, hoodies, hats etc. To acquire these types of clothing I will use some of my own and also look around in charity shops for cheap items of clothing.

Typography Research

To produce more a more vibrant and bold piece of text I experiment will different colours and different types of drop caps. I think that a contrast of colours will produce the most interesting style of text. Drop caps will add emphasis to the piece of text and will make it look more interesting and attractive. I think the font style will also be very important as it will help the magazine to appeal to the target audience, so I will need to choose a font that is informal but also easy to read.
